Importing Data

Note:  Your role must have the Manage Surface Uploads permission enabled to import data. See Site Settings > Roles for more information.

The surface model represented in GeoSpatial Manager is an as-built model derived from many individual source surfaces. Each source surface in turn may have been derived from one or many sources. The Import tool allows you to upload source surface files, which GeoSpatial Manager then automatically merges into the as-built surface.

Tip:  You can also upload surfaces directly from PointStudio into a Geospatial Manager project. See Publish to Geospatial Manager in PointStudio help.

The Import tool also allows you to upload GeoTIFF image files associated with the surface model to be stored in an associated Mapbox account.

Note
  • GeoSpatial Manager must be configured for use with a Mapbox account before you can upload images. See Surface Imagery for more information.

  • If ArcGIS is the preferred imagery provider, images cannot be uploaded via GeoSpatial Manager. They must be uploaded directly to ArcGIS. Procedures for this are beyond the scope of this site.

Tip:  When initially importing multiple historical surfaces, import the oldest surface first, then check the visualisation before importing the remaining surfaces.

To upload surfaces or images, follow these steps:

  1. Click Import located at the top of the page. A page will display that allows you to import files.

  2. Specify one or more files for upload. There are two ways to do this, as follows:

    • Drag files directly from Windows File Explorer and drop them into the area in the middle of the page labelled Drag and Drop Files.

    • Click the (Add new files) button. In the file browser that opens, select the files you want to import, then click Open.

    Note

Surface files must be one of the following formats:

    • Vulcan Triangulation file (.00t)

    • Maptek Object file (.maptekobj). Maptek Object files must contain exactly one surface.

    • AutoCAD DXF file (.dxf)

    • Wavefront OBJ file(.obj)

Images must be GeoTIFF files (.tif, .tiff) that correctly georeference the surface model.

After you have specified the files, they appear in a list with each new file highlighted in red. The red highlight indicates that GeoSpatial Manager needs more information about the file before it can be imported, explained in the next step.

  3. Configure the settings of each file.

To the right of the file list are several tabs where you can configure the details of selected files.

Select one or more files by making sure their checkboxes are selected in the file list. Then, configure each detail section on the right, such as Time or Coordinate System, by selecting the section and filling out the fields as necessary.

Note:  Required fields in each section are marked with an asterisk (*). These fields must be set before you can proceed with surface import. When you have configured all required fields, the Upload Files button will become enabled.

Expand below for information on each file setting category.

  4. Select the files you want to upload. You can do this by making sure their checkboxes are selected in the file list. If you have many files, you can select all valid files by clicking the Select Valid button.

    • To remove files from the list of surfaces to import, select their checkboxes in the file list and the click the (Remove all currently selected files) button.

  5. Click Upload Files to upload the selected files.

After uploading, GeoSpatial Manager queues files in chronological order for processing into the as-built surface. Switch to the Home page to view the surface.
