Centroid
Obtain Centroid Coordinates
The Centroid option reports the centroid coordinates of a closed polygon or a closed solid triangulation in a standard Vulcan text window. The centroid is the gravity centroid and its location depends on the shape of the object.
The Centroid option is a quick way to export the centroids to a usable file format. For more information on the design object other than the object name, use File > Export ASCII. This option provides an array of options for export.
Instructions
Click Centroid on the Analyse toolbar.
or
On the Analyse menu, point to Details, and then click Centroid to display the Calculate Centroid panel.
Select the type of object (polygon or triangulation) for which you want to find the centroid.
Calculated centroids are automatically printed to the Vulcan Console. The following is an example of how it is printed:
Triangulations: Triangulation: F:\Work|Support|xxx1.00t 1: Centroid coordinate (X, Y, Z)= 4980.000 5010.000 5000.030 Triangulation: F:\Work\Support\xxx2.00t 2: Centroid coordinate (X, Y, Z)= 5010.000 5020.000 5000.030 Polygons 1: Centroid of object (X, Y, Z)= 4960.647 5004.644 0.000 2: Centroid of object (X, Y, Z)= 5026.590 5021.748 0.000
Select the Save check box to save the report to a Text (.txt) or Character Separated Value (.csv) file. The following is an example of how data is reported in a .txt or .csv:
Triangulations Triangulation name, cent_X, cent_Y, cent_Z Objects Object name, cent_X, cent_Y, cent_Z
Click OK.
Select the polygon or triangulation (if only one triangulation is loaded, then it is selected automatically). If a triangulation is open, or contains crossing triangles, then a message to that effect displays. No centroid will be reported.
The centroid is graphically displayed as a cross. This cross is placed in an underlay that is given a sequence number.
Figure 1: Centroid graphical display
The centroid coordinates are then displayed in a message box, as well as the Report Window. The sequence number of the underlay containing the graphical display is also reported.
Click OK.
You will then be asked whether or not you want to keep the underlay(s).
The Calculate Centroid panel is then redisplayed. Cancel to exit the option.
The Object Label to Text option (under the Analyse > Label submenu) can be used to label the polygons with the centroid coordinates.
