Polygon Area
Compute Area Volumes for Selected Polygons
Use the Polygon Area option to measure the planar areas of selected polygons and use those areas to compute volumes. It also includes the ability to calculate the area of "doughnut" polygons, that is, polygons in polygons. The calculated volumes and areas are shown in the Report Window.
The name of the object is used to distinguish between the polygons in the report. Use the Name option (under the Design > Attribute Edit submenu) to change the object name to suit your report requirements. For example, you might want to use the polygon's level instead.
Tip: The Polygon Area option is only suitable for planar polygons, (that is, all points composing the polygon lie in the same plan).
Instructions
Click Polygon Area on the Analyse toolbar.
or
On the Analyse menu, point to Details, and then click Polygon Area to display the Object Area panel.
Current Window Units
This field informs you of the units set for the current window. Use the Edit option (under the View > Windows submenu to change the units.
Units
Area Units
Specify the area units. The available units are:
Metric Units | Imperial Units |
---|---|
Square Centimetres | Square Feet |
Square Metres | Square Yards |
Hectares | Square Miles |
Square Kilometres | Acres |
Volume Units
Specify the volume units. The allowable units are:
Metric Units | Imperial Units |
---|---|
Cubic Centimetres | Cubic Feet |
Cubic Metres | Cubic Yards |
Acre-Feet |
Calculate Volume
Select this check box to compute volumes from the calculated areas. The volume is computed by multiplying the area by a thickness value.

Thickness
Use Object Value for Thickness
Select this option to use the object value as the thickness.
Use Constant Thickness
Select this option to enter a value for the thickness.
End Area
Standard End Area Calculation
Select this option to use the Standard End Area formula for the volume calculation. In this calculation, only the area of the current polygon is use in the volume calculation.
Average End Area Calculation
Select this option to use the Average End Area formula for the volume calculation. In this calculation, the areas of the current and previous polygon are averaged and then multiplied by the thickness.

Report Options
This section of the panel allows you to specify the number of decimal places for area, value and volume in the report. The number of decimal places for area and volume can be between 0 and 10. However, the range of decimal places for value is only between 0 and 3.
The values will be rounded to the specified number of decimal places.
Save Report to File
Select this check box to save the area/volume report to a file in your current working directory. If this check box is selected, you will need to specify the name of the resulting report (a maximum size of 90 alphanumeric characters). The project code will be used to prefix the file name.
You can also append a header to the top of the resulting report. This section can contain up to 90 alphanumeric characters.
