Values in Vulcan Field Survey files (.vff) are column formatted and begin with a 4 character record type followed by a space. Header records can either contain no value or a single value, while data records contain a series of tag and value pairs (depending on the record type). A comment record will have an asterisk (*) in the first column.

Header records
Record Description Note
BEGH Begin header. Must be the first of the header records. No value.
ENDH End header. Must be the last header record. No value.
JOB Job name.
DATE Date.
SVYR Surveyor's name.
INST Instrument name.
SERL Instrument serial number.
ANG Type of angle being recorded. Either DEGS or GONS.
VERS File version.
SRCE Advisory record identifying what instrument type wrote the file.
ONBG Set to TRUE if horizontal angles are adjusted to be bearings.

Data records
Record Description
STN

Contains the coordinates of the station used in the pickup, For example, instrument, backsight, resected etc.

ID Alpha 16 Station Name
E Numeric 16.3 Easting
N Numeric 16.3 Northing
RL Numeric 16.3 Level
OCC

Defines the location of the instrument.

ID Alpha 16 Station Name
IH Numeric 16.3 Instrument Height
SC Numeric 8.3 Line of scale factor for UTM reductions
TY Numeric 8.3 Type of setup. The setup type is one of "Set Azimuth", "Known Backsight" or "Resection".

If the scale and setup type entries are missing, then the scale will be set to '1.0' and the "Known Backsight" setup type will be used.

BS

Backsight record. This record should follow the OCC record, otherwise the survey is assumed on-bearing.

Multiple shot record. This is a special record type that defines how to interpret the SS records that follow.

Alpha 16 Order of faces
Numeric 16 Number of rounds

The order of faces can be;

  • B'F' - back and foresight in face only
  • B'F'F"B" - back and foresight face 1, then fore/backsight face 2
  • B'F'B"F" - back and foresight face 1, then back/foresight face 2

This record is followed by a series of single shot (SS) records. The IDs from the first set of face 1 shots will define the actual point names.

CRD

Contains the coordinates of a point.
