LSQ Smooth
Use the LSQ smooth option to move a circular (or elliptical) patch across the grid creating a 3rd (2nd or 1st depending on the number of points) surface from which new grid values are calculated.
Least Squares smoothing is not an iterative process. It will migrate values, but not nearly to the same degree as the standard Smooth process. Without any data honouring, LSQ Smooth tends to flatten the grid.
Note: LSQ Smooth option does not smooth across breaklines.
Instructions
On the Grid Calc menu, point to Model, and then click LSQ Smooth to display the Least Squares Smoothing panel.
Radius of the smoothing patch in cells
Enter the radius of the patch to be used in the LSQ smoothing process.
Angle of orientation for the patch
Enter the orientation (as an angle) of the major-axis of the LSQ smoothing patch.
Ratio of the patch major and minor axis
Enter a number that represents the ratio of the major to minor axes of the patch.
For example, if you enter '1', then the ratio is 1:1 (which is a circular patch). If you enter '2', then the ratio is 2:1 (the major axis is twice the size of the minor axis).
Data honouring
Select this option to honour the data points. This means that the resulting grid will still contain the data points at their correct value.
Non data honouring
Select this option to dishonour the data points. This means that the resulting grid's data points will be smoothed, and the points will not be at their original value.
Honour breaklines
Select this check box to honour breakline data.
Honour strings
Select this check box to avoid smoothing across strings. Original values will be retained.
Honour spot heights
Select this check box to avoid smoothing the spot heights. Original values will be retained.
Click OK.
The grid is then smoothed. If you chose to display the grid dynamically, then the grid is updated automatically. If you did not display the grid dynamically, redisplay the grid using the Static Display Grid option.
