Smooth
Use the Smooth option to remove undesirable discontinuities from a grid, such as the facets that may result from using the triangulation method with trending. Smoothing uses the loaded data points to restrict the smoothing process to grid points that lie between data values. This process is iterative. Each iteration (repetition) relaxes the surface and brings it closer to a smooth polynomial surface.
The process will automatically terminate when the largest change to a surface value is less than 0.2% of the largest change caused by the first iteration. This may be after fewer passes than the number requested.
Smoothing will work if no data points are loaded, but there is no guarantee that the smoothed surface will honour the original data points from which it was generated.
Instructions
On the Grid Calc menu, point to Model, and then click Smooth to display the Fast Smoothing panel.
Smoothing passes
Enter the number of smoothing passes required. The greater the number of passes, the more relaxed (smooth) the grid. The maximum number of passes is 10.
Data honouring
Select this option to honour the data points. This means that the resulting grid will still contain the data points at their correct value.
Non data honouring
Select this option to dishonour the data points. This means that the resulting grid's data points will be smoothed and the points will not be at their original value.
Honour breaklines
Select this check box to honour breaklines. This means that there will be no smoothing across the breaklines. Original values will be retained.
Honour strings
Select this check box to honour strings. This means that there will be no smoothing across strings. Original values will be retained.
Honour spot heights
Select this check box to honour spot heights. This means that there will be no smoothing of the spot heights. Original values will be retained.
Click OK.
The grid is smoothed. If you chose to display the grid dynamically, then the grid is updated automatically. If you did not display the grid dynamically, redisplay the grid using the Static Display Grid option.
