Dip and Strike

The following table describes the tools in the Dip and Strike section of the Geotechnical tab.

Tool Description
Smart Query Allows the user to focus on picking individual discontinuities.
Query Displays the dip (angle of descent) and strike (angle of intersection with a horizontal plane, relative to north) of a feature.
Extract Enables the user to identify individual regions containing planes of interest, and then automatically highlighting and selecting all similar planar regions over the rest of the surface/area of interest. A key application would be to select one fault plane and the procedure will automatically identify all others in the view that meet the selection criteria.

Smart Query

To use the Smart Query tool:

  1. Go to Geotechnical > Dip and Strike > Smart Query. This will open a new panel.

Query

To use the Query tool:

  1. Go to Geotechnical > Dip and Strike Query.

  2. Select an object in the view.

Extract

To use the Extract tool:

  1. Go to Geotechnical > Dip and Strike > Extract. This will open a new panel.

  2. Specify the data to extract discontinuities from by populating the Data to extract from field.

  3. Select points on the surface that represent the plane of interest.

    • Angle threshold defines the angles between which other planes will be considered similar to the original plane of selection.

    • Minimum area defines the minimum area to define the similar planes.

    • Maximum area defines the maximum area to define the similar planes.

  4. Specify the destination of the extraction by setting the Destination field.

  5. Make a primitive selection in the view.

  6. Click the Apply button to begin the process of finding similar planes or the OK button to begin the process then exit the panel when finished. The number of planes discovered will be displayed in the panel.
