Tutorial - Creating Precedences


The Gantt Scheduler integrates mine design and scheduling into one package, removing the need to import/export or deal with different data and file formats. For current Vulcan users, this means you will no longer need to use a separate scheduling tool. Gantt Scheduler is easy to learn as the menu options, data structure, and terminology are consistent throughout Vulcan.

Opening Your Data File in Vulcan

Dataset for this tutorial is in the GanttSchedulerData file. (Click the link to download the dataset.)

Opening the Gantt Scheduler

  1. In Vulcan, select Gantt > Open. The Gantt Scheduler application opens.
  2. In the top left corner of the Gantt Scheduler application, click on the Maptek File icon to access the File menu.
  3. Click Open, then browse to and select the Beta_DemoUG.vgantt file.

Creating Activities

Create design activities from Vulcan

  1. In Vulcan, select Gantt > Activity > Create.
    1. Click Select Objects, then click All on the Select By menu that displays to select all objects and return to the Create Activity panel. The List Preview section of the panel shows the Activity Names and Activity Types which are evaluated by expressions defined in the Setup tab of the Gantt Scheduler.
    2. Click Browse Triangulations, then browse to the production.tri/Stoping.tri folder.
      • Click the double right arrow icon to select all of the triangulations, then click OK to return to the Create Activity panel.
    3. Click OK to send the activities to the Gantt Scheduler.

Create activities for milestone activities from the Gantt Scheduler

  1. In the Gantt Scheduler, on the Home tab, in the Activities group, click New to display the Activity Information panel.
    1. In the Name box, enter Shaft Complete.
    2. Select November 14, 2014 as the Start date. The End date will be updated automatically.
    3. Enter 0.0 in the Work box.
    4. Click OK.

Creating Precedences

Create manual precedences by clicking through the mining sequence

  1. In Vulcan, select Gantt > Precedences > Vulcan Manual Precedences to display the Vulcan Precedences panel.
  2. Click OK.
  3. Begin clicking on objects in Vulcan in the order in which they will be mined.
  4. When finished, right-click twice to complete the option.
  5. Click Accept Precedences.
  6. Enter Vulcan Manual in the Precedence Group box, and then click OK. The precedences are stored in the precedence group.
  7. In the Gantt Scheduler, on the Precedences tab, click Group Manager to display the Precedence Group Manager panel.
  8. Select the Vulcan Manual group.
  9. Clear the Applied check box so that these precedences will not be applied in the Gantt chart.
  10. Click OK.

Create precedences automatically using spatial logic

  1. In the Gantt Scheduler, on the Precedences tab, click New Group to display the Allocate Precedence Group panel.
  2. Enter Lateral Development in the Name box, then click OK.
  3. On the Precedences tab, click Spatial Precedences to display the Spatial Precedence Rules panel.
  4. Click the Add icon to create a new rule.
  5. Enter Lateral Development in the Name box.
  6. Select Drifting from the Predecessor Activity Type list.
  7. Select Drifting from the Successor Activity Type list.
  8. In the Radius section, enter 0 in the From box, 20 in the To box, and select Feet from the list.
  9. Click Apply Rule and wait for Vulcan to find the precedences. When the Precedences message displays with the number of precedences found, click OK to return to the Spatial Precedence Rules panel.
  10. Click OK.

Create spatial precedences to link the development to the stopes

  1. Create a new precedence group in the Gantt Scheduler.
    • In the Gantt Scheduler, on the Precedences tab, click New Group to display the Allocate Precedence Group panel.
    • Enter Development to Stoping in the Name box, then click OK.
  2. Create a new precedence rule in the Gantt Scheduler.
    • On the Precedences tab, click Spatial Precedences to display the Spatial Precedence Rules panel.
    • Click the Add icon to create a new rule.
    • Enter Development to Stoping in the Name box.
    • Select Drifting from the Predecessor Activity Type list.
    • Select Stoping from the Successor Activity Type list.
    • In the Inclination section, enter -90 in the From box, 0 in the To box, and select Degrees from the list.
    • In the Radius section, enter 0 in the From box, 140 in the To box, and select Feet from the list.
    • Click Apply Rule and wait for Vulcan to find the precedences. When the Precedences message displays with the number of precedences found, click OK to return to the Spatial Precedence Rules panel.
    • Click OK.
