Care and Maintenance

Care instructions

Table 3-1 outlines the measures you should take to protect and maintain the scanner, FieldHHC tablet, and other accessories1 from various conditions and hazards.

Important:  Never hose down the scanner. Water can enter and cause damage.

Important:  Never use solvents to clean the scanner, FieldHHC tablet, or accessories.

Condition or hazard Scanner FieldHHC Tablet and Accessories

Shock

  • Take care to prevent the scanner from falling. See Carrying and placing the scanner for recommended practices when carrying and placing the scanner.

  • Use the transit case to keep the scanner protected.

  • The tablet is ruggedised, but take reasonable care to protect if from being dropped.

  • Store the tablet and required accessories in the transit case or the backpack when not in use.

Dust

  • Use a clean damp cloth to clean dust from scanner panels.

  • Use a wet soft cloth with clean water to remove dust from the scanning window.

  • Use a separate cloth to dry the scanner.

  • Follow the manufacturer’s recommendations.

Dirt or mud

  • Use a wet (but not soaked) cloth to remove debris from all surfaces. Use a cloth and mild detergent to clean all surfaces.

  • Dry all surfaces with a clean, non-scratch microfibre cloth, particularly the scanning window.

Tablet

  • Follow the manufacturer’s recommendations.

Electrical accessories

  • Avoid exposure to dirt or mud. Follow the manufacturer’s cleaning instructions.

Corrosive environments

  • Use a wet (but not soaked) cloth and mild detergent to clean all surfaces.

  • Dry with a clean non-scratch micro fibre cloth, particularly the scanning window.

Mains-powered devices

  • Avoid exposure to corrosive environments.

Tablet

  • Follow the manufacturer’s care instructions.

Rain

  • Minimise long-term exposure to rain where possible. Immediately dry the scanner with a soft cloth after use.

  • Avoid placing a wet scanner into its transit case.

Mains-powered devices

  • Do not expose mains-powered electrical equipment to rain, unless otherwise instructed by manufacturer.

Tablet

  • Follow the manufacturer’s care instructions.

Temperature

  • Follow the manufacturer’s care instructions.

Humidity

  • Minimise long-term exposure to high humidity, if practicable.

  • Dry wet surfaces on the scanner exterior after use.

  • Allow the scanner to equalise and dry in air-conditioned room for at least an hour.

  • If condensation is observed inside the scanner, allow it to dissipate in a dry environment.

Tip:  Place desiccant bags in the transit case when storing a scanner that operates in humid conditions.

  • Follow the manufacturer’s care instructions.

Cleaning frequency

The scanner should be cleaned after its tasks have been completed and, where possible, before it is placed into its transit case. Concentrations of debris or fluids should be removed at first opportunity, particularly from optical surfaces.

Keeping the transit case clean and dry

The transit case best protects the scanner when its interior is clean and dry. Periodically remove loose debris using a vacuum cleaner. Clean the foam liner using a damp cloth and allow the case to dry before closing the lid.

Tip:  A dry transit case helps prolong the health of the scanner by reducing the build-up of humidity. If a wet scanner is placed in the case—or one that has been working in humid conditions—promptly open the lid as soon as you are in a dry environment, remove all contents, and allow the case to thoroughly dry.

Transporting the scanner kit

Please adhere to the following recommendations to ensure the secure transportation of the scanner, its accompanying accessories, and batteries.

Recommendations for using the transit case

Maptek recommends using the transit case for the following purposes:

  • Storing the scanner and accessories for any period of time

  • Transporting the scanner to a destination

  • Protecting the scanner on site whenever it is not in use

Placing items in the transit case

Place the items that belong in the transit case in their correct recesses. Follow the example illustrated in Transit case.

Important:  Always place the scanner face-down in the transit case.

Important:  Transporting the scanner with a battery inserted or without placing it into its transit case may cause damage to occur and void the warranty.

Note:  Remove the battery before packing the scanner. Leaving the battery in the scanner will gradually discharge it, even when the scanner is off. Store your batteries in the battery recesses in the transit case when not in use.

Tip:  Other small items may be placed in the transit case provided they are packaged to prevent them from being damaged or damaging other items during transit.

Recommendations for using the backpack

The backpack provides convenient additional storage capacity when transporting your most-needed items, helping to leave your hands free. Use the backpack to carry the following items:

  • FieldHHC tablet

  • Ethernet LAN cable

  • Battery chargers (for the scanner or FieldHHC tablet batteries)

  • Sundry items or accessories

Important:  Do not place loose or unprotected batteries in the backpack, particularly in the presence of metal parts that may cause a short circuit.

Tip:  Leave the FieldHHC tablet battery installed during transit. There is no need to remove the battery, except for long-term storage.

Calibrating and servicing the scanner

The scanner is a precision instrument. To maintain its performance and accuracy, Maptek recommends that it is carefully maintained and regularly serviced. Servicing the scanner periodically ensures that the scanner and FieldHHC controller are kept up to date and warranty conditions comply with those stated in International Warranty.

Maptek scanners are manufactured and serviced in a facility certified to the ISO 9001 quality standard and calibrated to the Australian National Association of Testing Authorities (NATA) standard.
