Installation Overview

Before installing Vulcan on your system, it is necessary to understand the Maptek Workbench and how it helps manage Vulcan installations.

Workbench

Maptek Workbench is a graphical user interface (GUI) for Maptek products. The Workbench can have multiple applications open at the same time for quick and easy access. These applications can be installed in the form of Workbench plugins—for example, Vulcan is now installed as a plugin.

Installer Concept

Before installing Vulcan, you need to install several other packages for Vulcan to run properly.

Prerequisites

The prerequisites in the following table create the necessary environment for Workbench and Vulcan installation.

Vulcan prerequisites
Microsoft Visual C++ SP1 MFC Patch Redistributable Package (x64)
Microsoft Visual C++ 2012 Update 4 Redistributable Package (x64)
Microsoft Visual C++ 2013 Redistributable Package (x64)
Microsoft Visual C++ 2017 Redistributable Package (x64)
Microsoft .NET Framework 4.6.2 or later
Trimble Link Engine SDK

Workbench installer

The Workbench comes with two types of installers, bundle and MSI.

Installer Description

Bundle

(MaptekWorkbenchSetup.exe)

This bundle installs Workbench along with all the prerequisites and services like Maptek Shared Plugins and Maptek Account Broker.

MSI

(MaptekWorkbench.msi)

This installs just the Workbench and not the prerequisites.

Maptek Shared Plugins

Maptek Shared Plugins refers to a set of plugins that can be shared across various Maptek products. For example, Vulcan might require A, B, and C plugins while PointStudio might require A, B, and D. The Workbench provides this common platform of shared plugins for Maptek applications.

There is a separate MSI (MaptekSharedPlugins.msi) for Maptek Shared Plugins.

Maptek Account Broker

Maptek Account Broker is a service which allows Maptek products to manage different accounts. This service is required to verify and manage accounts and their associated licences.

There is a separate MSI installer (MaptekAccountBroker.msi) for Maptek Account Broker.

Vulcan installer

Vulcan also comes with two types of installers, bundle and MSI.

Installer Description
Bundle This bundler installs Vulcan along with all the prerequisites, Workbench, and services like Maptek Shared Plugins and Maptek Account Broker.
MSI This installs Vulcan only as a Workbench plugin and therefore all the prerequisites and Workbench need to be already installed.

Versions

Each bundle installer contains specific versions of Workbench and Vulcan.

For example, if you use Vulcan 12.0.0 bundle installer, it installs Vulcan 12.0.0 and Workbench 3.0 along with the latest versions of prerequisites and services.

The following table shows Vulcan bundles and their respective Workbench versions.

Vulcanbundle Workbench MSP MAB
12.0.2 3.1 3.1 3.1
12.0.0-12.0.1 3.0 3.0 3.0
11.0.x 2.0 2.0 -
10.1.3-10.1.6 1.1 1.0 -
10.0.x-10.1.2 1.0 1.0 -

Note:  Any Vulcan version from 10.0.6 and above will work fine with the latest Workbench version. But a Workbench version below the Vulcan version’s requirement may not work.. For example, Vulcan 12.0.0 doesn’t work with WB 2.0.

Ideal Installation

The ideal way to install Vulcan is to use the bundle installer (.exe). This installer checks for versions, and installs or updates the Workbench and its prerequisites only when required.

The bundle installer (.exe) uses the latest versions of Maptek Workbench, Shared Plugins, and Account Broker whenever possible. For example:

  • If you have an older version of Workbench on your system, it upgrades to the newer version bundled with the installer.

  • If you already have a newer version of Workbench on your system and you are using an installer with an older version, it keeps the existing version.

In other words, the bundle installer (.exe) streamlines Vulcan installation and manages updates automatically as needed.

Notes

Maptek recommends all clients working with shared network data run the latest version of Vulcan to preserve data integrity.

Please review the Network Settings for important information about maintaining data integrity.
