Step-by-Step: Labelling Objects in Vulcan

This guide explains how to use the Object Label functionality in Vulcan to display identifiers and attributes for geological or design entities. This is useful for labelling drillholes, surfaces, block models, and more during your mining analysis workflow.

Overview

  • Object labels are displayed using a fixed font and appear face-on regardless of zoom level or view orientation.
  • Colours are assigned based on Graphics > Colours under Tools > Preferences.
  • Use Object Label to Text if editable or printable text labels are required.
  • Only one label set may be displayed at a time using this option.

Procedure

  1. From the Analyse menu, select Label > Object Label.
  2. The Label Object panel appears with:
    • Labelling Methods on the left
    • Attributes section on the right (varies by method selected)
  3. Choose a labelling method (e.g., Name, Value, Group, Feature). These can be edited via Workbench > Property Editor.

Default Object Naming Convention

Object Type Name Format
Arcs and Circles ARC$<n>
Ellipses ELIP_<n>
Lines and Polygons LINE_<n>
Points POINT_<n>
Rectangles RECT_<n>
Splines SPLIN$<n>
Text TEXT$<n>

Here, <n> refers to an incremented integer. For Open Pit blocks, names follow a three-digit format (e.g., 001, 002) up to 9999.

Label Positioning

  • Labels can appear at the start, centre, and/or end of an object.
  • Any combination of these positions may be selected.

Gradient Labelling

The Gradient method supports various formats:

  • Decimal angle (e.g., 23.7)
  • Grade ratio (e.g., 1:2000)
  • Percentage (e.g., 2.8%)

Decimal precision (up to 6 places) follows the Preferences > Miscellaneous settings.

Finalising Labels

  1. Click OK to confirm your selection.
  2. Use the Multiple Selection dialog to define which objects to label.
  3. The labels are rendered onscreen.
  4. To remove a label:
    • Use the Remove button in the toolbar
    • Or right-click an object and choose Remove Label

Pro Tips

  • To convert fixed labels into text for printing/export, use Object Label to Text.
  • You can label objects quickly via right-click context menus within Vulcan.
